Diables Noirs took the lead in the 27th minute courtesy of an own goal by Emmanuel Ampiah, leaving Rivers United to battle for an equaliser that came in the second stanza.
A brace from Nyima Nwangua in the 73rd and 77th minutes put Rivers United 2-1 up, with the Congolese side drawing level with nine minutes of regulation time left through Egalise Bassinga.
Rivers United now qualified for the last-8 with a game left with 10 points from five matches, same with Asec Mimosas of Cote D’Ivoire.
